Chris Abram says:

"Milnthorpe is a small historic town, south of Kendal, in the Lake District of England. This film was made by Chris Abram as part of his Bittern Country-Our Heritage production, a best selling, 2 hr 48 minute, double dvd which tells of the heritage and beauty of a forgotten part of England.

"There was once a county called Westmorland before political expediency changed the county boundaries and made it part of the new county of Cumbria. Westmorland's only port was that of Milnthorpe but when the railways came to the area in 1857 a viaduct was built across the river Kent estuary at Arnside, which then made it impossible for ships to sail up to the port.

"However, the town has survived and still flourishes, especially as it has the largest open market in the area. This eleven-minute film tells of its rise and fall through the thoughts of a local historian, old photographs linked with contemporary videography and stunning aerial filming.

"Also in the "Our Heritage" series of videos are "The Wye Valley-Our Heritage", "The Lune Valley-Our Heritage" and "Bittern Country-Our Heritage", the latter telling of the heritage and beauty of an area roughly covered by The Arnside/Silverdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty."
