Can You Help... Again?

20th June, 2007 - Ken Russell

The club has received the following message from Dr. Heather Norris Nicholson, Research Fellow at the Manchester Centre for Regional History:

"I am based part-time in the History Department at Manchester Metropolitan University and I am writing a book on the development of Britain’s amateur film making during the twentieth century. Much of my material will be drawn from the North West Film Archive where I have connections for some years and I hope to be able to re-create a real sense of the lively nature of the amateur scene in the North West from as early a date as I can get back to, with the help of some reminiscences and society archives.

"I write now in the hope that you might be interested to share some thoughts with me about the development of amateur interest in the North West. I am particularly interested in trying to find out about how the societies were formed and organized, patterns of membership (men, women and junior members) over the years, the range of productions and individual work, any involvement with the major annual competitions, links with other groups, premises used for meetings, and so on. I wish to try to cover a period from the late 1920s through to c.1970.

"I realize that there might also be members whose memories go back many years and who might be willing to share their personal recollections. Should projects already have taken place to record such memories, it would be most helpful to know about them."
